Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of job will I be qualified for after completion of the Land Surveying program?

Most students start out as a surveying assistant, or technician. Surveying assistants perform a variety of duties such as: setting up equipment, operating instruments, using a data recorder to gather field data and assisting in the preparation of maps. After starting out as a technician, many are promoted to a crew chief type position.

After graduating from the program, how long will it take me to become a registered surveyor?

After completion of the Land Surveying program, you need to work under a registered surveyor. After working in this capacity for 4 years, you are eligible to take the State and Federal examination. This is a two day test ( 1 day for State and 1 day for Federal). Successful completion of these examinations will lead to your licensure.

What are some courses I can take in high school that would help prepare me for this program?

Math!! (Algebra, geometry and trigonometry) There is a lot of mathematics required in the field of land surveying, however, it’s rather mid level in terms of difficulty and the same functions are typically used day after day.

What equipment will I use?

The Land Surveying program begins with a historical background. You will start out using technology 100 plus years old (compasses and transits) and progress to modern equipment like CAD and GPS.

Will I be able to find a job after completion of the program and what is the starting pay like?

For the most part the answer to that question is yes. It should be noted however that like most careers, your chances of being employed are higher in more urban settings like the Fox Valley, Milwaukee, or Madison areas. In the Rhinelander area, surveying technicians typically start out at $11-12.50 per hour. This figure goes up with experience, with crew chiefs making around $14 per hour. Registered land Surveyors would start around $20 per hour.

What equipment will I need?

Basically all the materials are provided through the college, with the exception of a basic drafting kit (approximately $35) and books.
