Lakes workshop June 26 at Nicolet to
help residents shape future of their lakes
A regional lakes workshop designed to promote the health of Northwoods waterways will be held at 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, June 26, at Nicolet College.
The event will focus on lake management planning and how developing a plan can help maintain the health of a lake that is in good shape or restore a healthy natural balance in a lake that has developed problems, such as an invasion of aquatic invasive species.
The workshop will feature five short morning presentations from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Nicolet College Theatre located in the Learning Resources Center. The presentations will address lake management planning from a variety of perspectives that include:
- why a lake needs a management plan by Dan Anderson, Long Lake of Phelps Lake District;
- what’s included in a comprehensive lake management plan by Kevin Gauthier, DNR;
- elements in the lake management planning process by Tim Hoyman, Wisconsin Association of Lakes;
- proactive planning to safeguard a healthy lake by Terry Rutlin, Lake Julia Lake Association
- implementing a lake management plan by Esther Letven and Fran West-Tomashek, Cloverleaf Lakes Protective Association.
A variety of booths will also be on display to provide information on a wide variety of issues that relate to Northwoods lakes and rivers.
Cost is $20 person. This includes program materials, a morning continental breakfast, and lunch. After the morning presentations six countywide lake and river associations from Oneida, Vilas, Forest, Lincoln, Langlade and Price counties will hold meetings. Current members of these associations as well as others interested in joining or learning more about these countywide groups are invited to attend these county meetings.
